Wedding Budgets in Denmark
What weddings actually cost in Denmark — regional differences, tax, gift norms, traditions, and a breakdown by city.
A traditional Danish wedding is a long, tightly-formatted dinner party — typically 8-10 hours, 60-120 guests, with a rigid sequence of speeches (forældretalen, vidnetalen, svigermors sang), the midnatssang and a post-midnight buffet. The budget follows that shape: venue + catering + drinks dominate, photography and music come next, everything else is relatively modest.
What you should know
- Denmark uses moms (VAT) at 25% — already included in every quote by law. No sales tax layered on top.
- Danish wedding gifts are predominantly cash, averaging 500-1,500 kr per guest. Most couples recover 30-50% of their total spend from gifts — Linden can apply this as an offset.
- Tipping is not expected for wedding vendors. Service charge is never added. Quoted price = final price.
- The folkekirken (Lutheran state church) is free for members; roughly 74% of Danes are members. Non-members get a civil ceremony at rådhuset (city hall) which is also free.
- Peak-season premium (June-August Saturdays) runs 20-35% on venues and photography. Fredagsbryllupper are rapidly gaining share and cut roughly 15%.
